Frey is in love

One day Frey had sneaked into Odin's highseat Hlidskialf. As the other gods he wasn't allowed, because it was possible to everything from there. When Frey sat looking at the world he suddenly glanced north, at Jotunheim, the land of the giants. At the same time the giant daughter Gerd lifted her arms to open the door to her father Gymir's house. Her arms shone up the heaven and Frey immediately fell in love. He didn't eat or sleep for days. He didn't speak to nobody. His father told Frey's servant and best mate Skirnir to go and talk to him. Skirnir didn't think it was a good idea, but he did as he was told. Frey answered that he had seen the most beautiful girl and that she lived at Gymir's farm. He also told Skirnir that if he was a good friend he would go and ask her to marry Frey. Skirnir then started his ride towards Jotunheim on Frey's horse, Blodughofi. With him was also Frey's sword Skrapp that could kill the enemies without somebody swinging it.

Gymir was the first who noticed the visitor and he asked his servants to invite the guest to the table. Skirnir then told him about Frey's love to his daughter and offered him eleven gold apples if Frey got what he wanted. Gerd answered that the farm had all the gold they needed and that she definitely not wanted to marry the aesir Frey. When Gerd disagreed to all the other suggestions and gifts Skirnir started to get desperate. He threatened her with the worst things he could think of, and after a while Gymir got afraid. He said that Gerd was allowed to marry Frey if he got the beautiful sword Skirnir was carrying. They then decided that the couple should meet in nine days in the copse Barri. Skirnir returns to Asgard where the worried Frey were waiting. Skirnir told him that Gerd was going to marry him, but also that his self-fighting sword, that could save him in Ragnarok, was given to her father.
