The human children
One day was Thor and Loki out in Midgard, travelling in Thor's four-wheeled wagon drawn by the goats Tandgrisner and Tandgnistr. In the evening they were tired and hungry so they decided to knock on the first door they saw. That cottage belonged to Egil Skytten. He welcomed the guests with his wife and his two children Tjalfi and Roskva. He told the aesirs that they offcourse were welcomed to stay over the night, but this was a poor family so they couldn't expect any dinner. Thor immediately told Egil that this was no problem at all. He told him about his goats that could be slaughtered, eaten up and then alive the next day. You just had to put the bones on the skin and raise the hammer Mjollner over it. So Egil helped Thor slaughter the goats and then they all ate with good appetite. Loki whispered to the son Tjalfi that the bone marrow in the legbone was really delicious and the next minute Tjalfi had eaten that also. In the morning when the guests were about to leave Thor noticed that one of the goats were lame in one leg. Thor got really upset. When it got clear that is was Tjalfi that had sucked out the bone marrow the parents got really afraid and asked Thor if there were anyway the could compensate him. Then Thor suggested that he could bring the children Tjalfi and Roskva back to Asgard, and the parents agreed to that. That is way there are two human children living side by side with the gods in Asgard. Related links: Loki Midgard Mjollnir Roskva Tandgrisner Tandgnistr Tjalfi Thor |
